Panic Disorders



Definition:

The physical symptoms may include chest pain, heart
palpitations, shortness of breathe, dizziness, or abnormal stress.

Medication:
Anti Depressants- used in the treatment of panic attacks and panic
disorders. this doesn't take effect for several weeks. For them to
work, they need to be taken continuously, not just during a panic attack.


Some antidepressants are under certain categories:
SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors)

Benzodiazepines- this anti anxiety drug acts very quickly (within 30
minutes to 1 hour). If they are taken during a panic attack, it will decrease
some symptoms. Benzodiazepines are addictive and have withdrawal
symptoms. Take with caution.

  • Alprazolam (Xanax)- panic, generalized anxiety, phobias, social phobias
  • Clonazapam (Klonopin)- panic, phobias, social phobias
  • Diazepam (Valium)- generalized anxiety, panic, phobias
  • Lorazepam (Ativan)- phobias, panic, generalized anxiety
  • Oxazepam (Serax)- generalized anxiety, phobias
  • Chlordiazepoxide (Librium)-phobias, generalized anxiety

Treatment:
-cognitive behavioral therapy- this type of treatment focuses more on the behaviors
and thinking patterns. It also helps you look at your fears in a more realistic manner.

- taking an antidepressants can reduce the occurrence of a panic attack and can
also help prevent anxiety.

-psychotherapy is a treatment that can clear up the disorder.
